I'm a thirty-something still trying to figure out what to be when I grow up. I'm a follower of Jesus and a work in progress in light of it. I have a bunch of brothers and sisters and they have a whole mess of kids. I'm most "me" when I'm writing or praying...

God And Pancakes

Two thoughts:

One...
I am growing tiresome of pseudo-intellectual Christian types making Christianity all boil down to an equation of sorts. Systematic this and that - since when is following Jesus and being in love just like math?

And Two...
Just when I think I have God figured out I realize that I don't truly understand Him any more than the pancakes I made for breakfast today understands me... Creator and created - deal...

"God and Pancakes" ... sounds like the title of a Donald Miller book.

equations... as a techie, I like equations.

as a human, it makes things easier. if I can define things by certain steps or outlines, I can start putting God into this box of mine. i don't like it when I don't understand and I feel helpless. that means that I have to admit (to God) that I am weak. as a guy, I'm not allowed to be weak.

that most definitely sounds like a title DM would use... too bad...

it's funny how different people need to process thoughts in different ways. i'm a total artsy type and i need the unknown and all that to remind me of the intrigue. equations make me feel boxed in. whereas some people, like yourself, are drawn to systematic thinking because they connect with it. we just process differently - thankfully, God is big enough to handle both (and more) without Him getting confused.

I was kinda being sarcastic. well, I am technically minded. I can barely make toast if there's no recipe. however, i prefer formulas to stay on computer and in labs.

while certain things are cut-and-dry, there's something missing when we try to define God or figure Him out.

from what I've heard of married couples of 50 years, while you simultaneously fall more and more in love, you also know the spouse more and more.

so, I'm not sure why, with God, we have a hard time grasping the concept of the love relationship. while it's good to want to get to know God more, we seem to have a natural tendency to want to boil God down to a systematic this or that, or a 3-point outline. maybe it just makes it a little easier to digest.

or also, we don't like things that we can't figure out. some are more uncomfortable with that than others. if we can't figure it out, we're not in control of it. we tend to treat God like a swiss army knife.

I like to break things down and solve them b/c it can be solved tho that's not always the case. Then I get baffled and find all sorts of ways to make a logical explanation and when I can't that's when I say it's out of my control. In the end, it's really about one's sense of CONTROL. I like to have all things work according to the way I see based upon my hypothesis, however, God is showing my differently w/ my friend Luke and that is He's in control and I'm a mere mortal.
